Zayara — Full Creative Suite
A complete brand identity, investor pitch deck, brand guidelines, product mockups, and four coded website layouts, built end-to-end for a skincare brand's Bark.com design request — and an honest look at why the bid didn't win the job.
Overview & my role
An independent skincare brand posted a design request on Bark.com. I responded with the deepest proposal I've built for any lead — and it's still sitting on my drive, unsold.
"Zayara — Ancient Roots · Modern Science" is a concept for a Moroccan-heritage skincare line pairing argan oil, rose hip, and prickly pear with clinically-dosed actives (Vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide) across three product lines: Origine, Aktif, and Fusion. Instead of leading with a single visual the way I had on the Karmae bid, I scoped and built out a full CA$42,500 creative suite — brand identity, an investor pitch deck, a 7-page brand guidelines document, four product mockup scenes, and four coded website layouts — before the client made a decision. The bid was not selected.
- Design a logomark, wordmark, and three approved colourway variants (dark, light, gold) across the full product range.
- Build a 7-page brand guidelines document — essence, logo system, colour palette, typography, imagery direction, copy examples.
- Produce a 9-slide investor pitch deck with market sizing, go-to-market strategy, and financial projections.
- Render product mockup scenes for the full line, and code four distinct website layout directions.
- Price and scope the entire package as a single itemized proposal, submitted cold through Bark's lead system.
Project phases
-
Phase 1
Brand Identity System Built
Logo, palette, typography
A Moroccan star-lattice logomark with an oil-drop centre, a Cinzel wordmark lockup, and three approved colourways — Desert Ink (dark), Sahara Sand (light), and Argan Gold (accent) — applied across three product-line labels.
-
Phase 2
Guidelines, Pitch Deck & Mockups Built
Full documentation set
A 7-page print-ready brand guidelines PDF, a 9-slide investor pitch deck with market sizing and financial projections, and product mockup scenes covering the full Origine/Aktif/Fusion range.
-
Phase 3
Website Layout Directions Built
Four coded directions
Four distinct HTML/CSS layout concepts for the Zayara e-commerce site, from a minimal editorial direction to a warmer apothecary-style layout, each carrying the full identity system.
-
Phase 4
Bid Submitted Not selected
Bark.com lead response
The full itemized CA$42,500 proposal was submitted through Bark. The client went with a different designer. No feedback was given on the decision — the engagement simply closed.
What the lead asked for
- A premium, heritage-meets-science skincare identity — "ancient roots, modern science" as the core tension to resolve visually.
- A believable, launch-ready brand across every touchpoint: identity, guidelines, pitch materials, product visuals, and a website.
- A name and story that could support a wide product range across multiple lines and price points.
The key difficulty — in hindsight: Bark surfaces a lead to several designers at once, and a buyer compares quick, cheap-to-evaluate responses. A CA$42,500, five-category itemized proposal is the kind of quote an agency sends after a discovery call, not a cold first response to a lead — and building the entire suite before being chosen meant weeks of speculative production riding on a single unqualified bid.
Brand identity & label system
The logomark — a Moroccan six-point star lattice with an oil-drop centrepiece — carried across three approved colourways, one per product line: Origine in Argan Gold, Aktif in Desert Ink, Fusion in a deep Atlas teal.

Brand guidelines
The 7-page guidelines document specified the logo system, clearspace rules, the six-colour palette with Pantone and print values, and a three-font type hierarchy — everything a downstream printer, developer, or second designer would need without asking.

Website layout & product mockups
One of four coded layout directions — an apothecary-inspired editorial approach — plus a flat-lay mockup scene from the product visualization set, all rendered in pure HTML/CSS rather than photographed.

Why the bid didn't land — no sugar-coating
Karmae's Bark bid worked because one strong visual beat a written pitch. Zayara did the opposite, and it's worth naming exactly why that didn't work, not just that it didn't:
- Price didn't match the platform. CA$42,500 for a full creative suite reads as agency-scale pricing. Bark leads are overwhelmingly solo founders and small independent brands — someone posting a first design request there is far more likely expecting a quote in the hundreds to low thousands, not five figures.
- The whole suite was built before being chosen. Label colourways, a full guidelines document, an investor pitch deck, mockup scenes, and four coded websites — that's weeks of speculative production riding on one unqualified lead. If the answer is no, all of it is sunk cost.
- No budget-qualifying step. Nothing in the process confirmed the client's actual budget or timeline before building started. Assuming the high end of what a proposal could be, instead of asking, is a fast way to lose a bid before it's even read closely.
- Scale read as overhead, not fit. On a lead-gen platform where a client is comparing several designers quickly, an elaborate itemized quote can look like agency overhead rather than a nimble freelancer who understood the brief fast — the opposite of what won Karmae.
What changes next time
A. How I'll run future Bark leads
Lead with one tight, strong visual and a modest fixed-fee quote for the smallest useful deliverable — the same approach that won Karmae — instead of a full proposal. Win the relationship first, then offer the guidelines, pitch deck, and website tiers as paid add-ons once trust and budget are established.
Ask the budget question directly, in the first message, before producing anything beyond a concept sketch. A platform built around comparing multiple quick responses rewards speed and fit over completeness.
B. What the work is good for instead
Nothing here is wasted — the full Zayara suite is exactly the kind of package that belongs in front of a higher-budget prospect reached directly, through HoneyBook, or in a discovery-call context where an itemized, agency-scale quote is expected and appropriate. It now doubles as a template for that kind of engagement.
It's also a case study I'd rather show than hide. A portfolio that only shows wins isn't a credible one — knowing why a bid didn't land, and being able to say so plainly, is part of the same professional judgment that makes the wins worth trusting.
The short version: match the scope of the pitch to the platform and the buyer, confirm budget before building, and save the full creative-suite treatment for the clients who are actually shopping at that scale.
